Good Habits For Great Teeth

Welcome back to our dentistry blog!

We hope you are having a lovely autumn, and are all set for Halloween!

At Dores Dental, we strive to provide comprehensive dental solutions to the families of Longmeadow, MA all year round. In our office on Dwight Road, our services include cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry, and preventative dentistry.

While everything we do here matters, preventative dentistry is so very important to your health and wellness, and it really is a partnership between our team and your family. It quite frankly begins at home, and should start before your children even have teeth.

Your family needs to be fully aware that, when it comes to prevention, there are several primary areas of focus that can keep you on the good road throughout your life.

At-Home Hygiene

The first habit you will need to pass along to your children is daily brushing of teeth.

This is the least you can do to fight off plaque and tartar and keep disease and decay on the run. Plus, you will just feel better with a fresh, clean mouth.

The American Dental Association recommends brushing at least twice a day for two minutes at a time.

It is a small investment of time with a big payoff in terms of oral health.

Beyond The Toothbrush

No matter how much time you spend with a toothbrush, there will always be areas in between your teeth where tartar and plaque will hide.

Left alone, this could eventually result in cavities, periodontal disease, and tooth loss.

There is however, an easy solution: dental floss. Find some floss, and make it a part of your family’s daily routine.

Take our word for it, this is not nearly as painful as a root canal, or extraction.

Fluoride Is Your Friend

Brushing and flossing are practices that you should be keeping up with everyday. Another good one is finding a source for fluoride. Some mouthwashes contain fluoride and can further reduce bacteria while helping with your fight against tooth decay.

Did you know that fluoride is also readily available in our Longmeadow, MA tap water?

That’s why you should only get your water from a store-bought bottle when absolutely necessary.

Get To Know Your Dentist

Finding a dentist that you can trust is one of the best things you can do to optimize your health. Get to know your dentist and go visit them often, every 3-6 months is ideal.

It will make a big difference.

This is because our professional cleanings will do away with any tartar and plaque that have gained a foothold.

What’s more, our oral exams give us a chance to see if anything is out of the ordinary in your mouth or if there are any tell-tale signs of health concerns elsewhere in your body.

Gum disease, cavities, and even cancer can be caught early enough to contain.

In our experience, it is always easier to prevent a bigger problem now than to attempt to treat it later.

Unless, you like unnecessary pain and expense, keeping regular appointments is your best bet.
