Welcome back to another edition of our Longmeadow, MA dentistry blog.

Here at Dores Dental, we are always working hard to ensure that families in our community have access to comprehensive and convenient dentistry services.

In our office on Dwight Road, we offer teeth whitening, Invisalign clear braces, preventative exams, and a whole lot more.

While entrusted to our care, we will do our best to educate you on good hygiene practices at home and keep your mouth in optimal shape when you come in to see us every six months for a cleaning.

Still, in spite of your best efforts and all the support from our team, you may one day find yourself with a cavity.

It’s not the end of the world, especially when caught early enough.

In fact, most Americans can expect to deal with some level of tooth decay at some point in time.

We Have Better Treatments Now

Cavities have been effectively treated with silver dental fillings for many years.

We aren’t knocking them.

But if you have ever received silver amalgam fillings, you know that they look like dark blotches on your teeth whenever you open your mouth.

What’s more, they often invite unwanted questions or comments about what’s going on in there.

But nowadays we have made a giant leap forward in Longmeadow, MA with the invisible, mercury-free dental fillings that we offer at Dores Dental.

Mercury Comes At A Cost

Did you know that silver amalgam is actually a paste?

It is composed of mostly mercury along with a few other metals.

This explains why these old time fillings stand out, and not in a good way, in your mouth.

Mercury-free fillings, on the other hand, are made of composite resin, glass ionomer or ceramic.

It’s alright if you don’t exactly know what that entails.

Basically, the difference is that these fillings are tooth-colored (your exact tooth color, in fact), biocompatible materials that contain no mercury or other metals.

Moreover, these newfangled fillings allow for improved durability by bonding directly to your tooth structure.

You see, conventional silver amalgam fillings required significant enamel removal before application could take place.

Though the old school fillings seemed to have worked well enough, they were bad for you in that the process weakened your tooth and left it more likely to fracture.

How Are Mercury-Free Fillings Placed At Dores Dental?

These new and improved fillings can be placed in just one hassle-free appointment.

First, our team will isolate the tooth in question while protecting the rest of your mouth with a rubber dam.

Next, your dentist will clean the tooth, remove all signs of decay, and re-shape it.

The appropriate shade of composite resin is then mixed to match your teeth and applied to the tooth layer by layer.

Throughout the process, each layer is hardened by special light.

Lastly, your filling is trimmed, adjusted, and polished.

Then you will be good to go.

And because there won’t be any blackish-gray reminders when you smile, no one will ever know that you’ve been treated for cavities at all!
