The Vast Benefits of Water

If you are like most, you are always looking for a way to improve yourself. Maybe you are looking for a new way to lose weight, tone your muscles, have better memory, or just be healthier. We think a lot about ways that our patients can improve the health of their smiles, and we always come back to the idea of drinking more water. When we talk with patients about their health habits, we can generally narrow poor oral health down to the beverages and foods that a patient consumes. Beverages, especially, can lead to severe dental woes. Read below to find out why.

Less Sugar – A big problem with drinks like tea, coffee, juice, and sports drinks is the sugar content. We generally keep a drink next to us throughout the day. If you are drinking something that contains sugar, you are giving your teeth a constant bath of sugar, which gives bacteria plenty of time and opportunity to wreak havoc on your tooth enamel.

Less Acidity – Coffee and tea both contain acid, but the biggest acidity problem comes from soda. Even if you are drinking diet soda to avoid the sugar problem, you are still exposing your teeth to lots and lots of acid. That acid wears down your tooth enamel, which makes it easier for bacteria to cause decay.

Better Saliva Production – Regardless of what you currently drink, if it’s not water, you could be harming your teeth by not providing adequate hydration to your mouth. You need to stay hydrated in order to produce saliva which protects your teeth from harmful bacteria. Drinking more water ensures that you are doing what you can to keep your smile healthy and strong.

The best news of all is that drinking water benefits your entire body in more ways than we could ever talk about in a single blog post. Want to lose weight, improve your brain power, get healthier, etc? Drink more water. Contact us today for more information about how drinking water will benefit your smile. We can’t wait to see you and talk with you very soon!
