Restoring Broken-Down Teeth

Your teeth have specific jobs that you need them to perform. Namely, you need to be able to use your teeth to chew your food. Your teeth also help you with speech, but that’s for another conversation. Today, we want to focus on the primary function of chewing!

If your teeth are not able to chew, you suffer because you can’t eat the foods you love, and you can’t gain the nutrition from healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. It takes pretty extreme circumstances for a tooth to reach this level of destruction, but it happens each and every day.

We call these teeth broken-down teeth because essentially, that is what has happened! Your teeth have broken or cracked apart until there is no longer any way for your tooth to function as it should. You guessed it, we need to repair those teeth quickly so that you can get back to a fully-functioning mouth!

What Causes a Tooth to “Break Down”?

There are many health and diet issues that lead to problems with your teeth, but the following list shows the top three final causes of a broken down tooth.

Old, Large Fillings – A filling is placed when your tooth has a cavity. In the past, dentists would use amalgam material to fill cavities. Over time, those fillings would weaken the teeth and cause the tooth to begin to break apart around the filling.

Injury – Teeth get broken, cracked, and chipped from taking the wrong bite, getting hit in the mouth by something hard, or some other form of accident.

Age – Over time, your teeth will get weaker. This is especially true for women (and men) who have a calcium deficiency. Your teeth are more likely to break and become injured the older you get.

Finding a Solution to Restore Your Tooth

Even though your teeth are getting weaker and breaking apart, there are solutions that will prevent a broken down tooth or repair the damage once it is done. You see, even if your tooth crown is broken, we will save the tooth root whenever we can! We generally use one of the following restorations to do so.

Inlays/Onlays – An inlay is a custom-made filling that will fit completely within the cusps of your teeth, while an onlay will cover one or more of the cusps of the tooth. We use inlays/onlays when that large filling fails. If we can remove the filling and restore your tooth with an inlay/onlay, you can often enjoy many more years with that natural tooth!

Crowns – A crown is used when a tooth is so broken and cracked that it can no longer endure the rigors of chewing. A crown is a porcelain cap that we place over the entire tooth to seal out any harmful bacteria and to provide a structure wherein your tooth can still function.

Implants – There are some cases where the tooth is too far gone to leave it in your mouth. Even the root is no longer safe. In these cases, we carefully remove the entire tooth and replace it with a dental implant solution. The dental implant will look and feel like a natural tooth and will restore complete function to your mouth.
