Prevent Dental Disaster Before It Starts!

One of the number one things that we encourage our patients to do is to make a goal of preventing problems with their oral health before they start. In our Longmeadow, MA practice we can repair injuries, treat diseases, and even improve the appearance of your smile through advanced cosmetic dentistry. Of course, there is nothing more attractive than a set of natural, healthy teeth!

We place real value on the wellbeing of our patients, and if we can help you avoid a more involved procedure to fix a major problem (that will also be more costly), we will! Preventive dentistry at Dores dental is a comprehensive menu of treatments to protect your teeth from damage and disease.

Protecting You From Injury

We believe that our job doesn’t end when you get out of the big chair and walk out the front door. Our job is to make sure that our patients teeth are healthy everywhere they go!

That’s why we offer customized mouthguards to protect your teeth from injury. No matter if your injury is from an elbow from a big center in the paint, or if you yourself damaged your teeth due to the common (but serious) problem of bruxism (teeth grinding), we can make sure that your smile is safe and sound.

Dental Sportsguard

In the US alone, 5,000,000 teeth are avulsed (broken) every year, according to recent estimates. That is a huge number, but we also spend an estimated $500,000,000 on reparative dental work every year, too! A lot of that collective bill actually goes toward dental work for injuries that took place years before; a broken tooth hurts when it happens, but the damage it does to your overall oral health can follow you around for years, if not the rest of your life.

40% of those injuries are sports-related avulsions; Americans are pretty athletic, after all! To protect your teeth from injury while you’re playing your hardest, you should wear a  custom dental sportsguard. We can provide you with a protective mouthpiece that is tailored to your specific mouth and teeth (which makes it much more comfortable and a great deal more effective than store-bought, generic mouthguards). We offer a range of customization options, and we can even design your mouthguard for a specific sport!

Dental Nightguard

One of the leading causes of damaged teeth is a condition known as bruxism, or teeth-grinding. Most people grind or clench their jaws from time to time, but sufferers of bruxism do it all the time, especially during sleep. When you brux, you’re putting huge amounts of force on to your teeth for long periods of time (you can’t stop yourself, because you’re asleep); many times the amount of your normal bite strength. This will eventually cause your teeth to sustain a great deal of damage, in the form of chips, fractures, and cracks, all of which are pathways for infection and disease to cause even worse problems, such as an infected tooth (which will require a root canal to treat).

Just like our dental sportsguards, our dental nightguards are custom made just for you, and are designed specifically to be used while you sleep. Dental nightguards are very durable and they can take the punishment bruxism doles out every night, protecting your teeth from further damage.

Protecting You From Disease

Diseases that effect the oral cavity and the teeth can be devastating, not just because of the physical damage that is done, but also the toll it takes on your smile, which can be just as traumatic (if not more so). Protecting your smile isn’t something to take lightly. Human beings have evolved to use smiles to make critical assessments of each other, allowing us to decide who is a friend (or foe), and who is most likely to cooperate with us to achieve a common goal (whether that goal is bringing down a woolly mammoth, or a creating a successful business).

Gum Disease Prevention

Gum disease (or periodontal disease) is one of the most widespread and destructive public health problems that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. The American Academy of Periodontology and the Centers for Disease Control agree: they estimate that 50% of adults over the age of 30 have one of the two stages of gum disease: gingivitis (the first and less serious stage) and periodontitis (the second stage that is very serious, and if it isn’t treated immediately, will lead to tooth loss. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the US).

The most important part of dealing with gum disease is stopping it from happening in the first place! That can be accomplished with good oral hygiene habits (brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash twice a day, and seeing your dentist for cleanings and examinations twice a year).

If you can’t prevent gum disease, we can do the next best thing: reverse it by catching it early on. Gingivitis can be easily reversed with a deep cleaning and improvements to your oral health routine, both of which we can provide you with. However gingivitis is also very sneaky, as it doesn’t usually cause much discomfort when you have it, leading many to miss the symptoms (such as swollen gums that bleed easily).

This will lead to periodontitis, and from there, the race is on to save your teeth before they fall out. Your dentist will perform a deep cleaning to remove the tartar and plaque build up below the gum line and on the roots of your teeth; this is called scaling and root planing. We also may prescribe antibiotics to destroy the bacteria that cause the disease.

Because the symptoms of gum disease can sometimes hide in plain sight (if you don’t know what you’re looking for) the best thing to do is come in for an appointment!
