Oral Surgery Is More Gentle Than Ever

Oral Surgery 2 | Dores Dental - East Longmeadow, MA

The phrase “oral surgery” is right up there on the bogeyman list for many people, often rivaling a root canal for things they absolutely do not want to experience. Most people have heard a horror story about someone’s experience with tooth extraction or gum surgery. Those stories come from a time when oral surgery wasn’t as advanced or as gentle as it is today. At Dores Dental in in Longmeadow, MA, Dr. Jim Dores offers gentle and comfortable oral surgery services.

About Oral Surgery

Oral surgery doesn’t necessarily involve a scalpel or incisions. Tooth extractions are a routine oral surgery procedure and likely the most common. With today’s advanced dental imaging, Dr. Dores can clearly visualize the tooth roots and prepare for any difficult phases of the extraction.

Keeping your natural teeth is best, and Dr. Dores goes to great lengths to preserve each patient’s teeth. Sometime, though, restoring a tooth isn’t financially workable. Teeth may need to be extracted because a dental infection has progressed too far. Or a tooth may be crowding another tooth and preventing it from erupting as it should. Wisdom teeth can become impacted and need to be removed. Or some teeth may be removed so that you can have dental implants and new teeth that fit, feel, and function just like your natural teeth.

No Hurting Allowed

Today’s oral surgery is focused on providing the most comfortable experience possible for each patient. At Dores Dental, our gentle approach begins with ensuring your comfort with the numbing process. Our DentalVibe emits emits gentle vibrations that mask the feeling of the injection. And nothing else happens until you tell Dr. Dores that you’re completely numb.

For those who need a little more help relaxing during the procedure, we offer a menu of comfort options. Just ask! We’ll be happy to provide items to make your experience as comfortable as possible.

And if that’s not enough, you can also take advantage of oral sedation, which causes a deep sense of relaxation and detachment from what’s going on around you. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment if you choose this option; driving while sedated is a horrible idea.

It’s Not All About Extractions

Oral surgery can also be used to enhance as well as remove. Two fairly common procedures offered by Dr. Dores are gum reshaping and sinus lifts.

Gum Reshaping

Gums can recede for any number of reasons – infection, brushing too hard or with bristles that are too hard, clenching or grinding your teeth, and others. When gum tissue recedes, it exposes areas of your tooth that are normally protected.

To restore your gum line to its original position, Dr. Dores will transplant tissue to build up the gum tissue and allow it to cover your teeth roots. Healing is generally fairly quick and most patients experience minimal discomfort following the surgery.

Sinus Lifts

The single most important consideration in deciding whether dental implants are right for a person is the strength and thickness of the bone that will support the implants. Bone begins to deteriorate when a tooth is lost, meaning that the remaining bone may not be suitable for implants.

A sinus lift adds bone to your upper jaw where the bone has deteriorated, building it up and making it strong enough that implants can be placed.
