Finding the BEST Dental Restoration

A sad and unfortunate truth is that many of our patients will come to a day when they realize that they are about to lose one or more of their permanent teeth. It happens all the time here in Longmeadow, MA.

Many things can cause you to lose your natural teeth. You might develop decay, infection, or have an injury that results in the loss of a tooth. Some patients spend their entire lives with weak teeth and eventually lose them!

The good news is that you don’t have to spend the rest of your life with gaps in your smile. Whether you lose one tooth or many, we have solutions that can help you gain back your smile and your confidence! We want to take a look at some of those solutions today.

Why a Restoration is Important

Before we begin looking at individual restorations, we want to remind you that a dental restoration is actually very, very important! It will restore your ability to chew, speak, and smile. On top of that, a restoration will help your remaining teeth stay healthy longer! There is even evidence that shows that a person who has gaps in their smile is more likely to feel depressed or anxious!

The important thing to take away from all of this is that a dental restoration really is one of the most important things you can do for your aging smile. Don’t ignore the gap and try to move on because things will only get worse from there!

Single Tooth Restoration Options

Missing one tooth is more common than you might realize. This is not necessarily a sign of poor dental health, but it needs to be dealt with swiftly before the surrounding teeth have a chance to move into the empty space and create problems!

Dental Bridge
Your first option for a restoration is a dental bridge. This is an appliance made up of two crowns that are joined together by a false tooth. It is a very common procedure because for a long time, it was the only way that we could replace a missing tooth! In fact, it’s only been in the past decade or so that a second option has been available!

Bridges are popular, and this appliance can restore the look of your missing tooth and some of the function, but that’s about it. There are some serious problems with this restoration as well.

For example, the crowns on either side of the false tooth have to be bonded to the teeth adjacent to the gap. That means that we have to remove healthy tooth enamel from healthy teeth in order to place the bridge.

Even so, a dental bridge could be the best option for you. That is something we have to decide on a patient by patient basis. Each smile is unique with unique needs, but you can rest easy knowing that we will give you the best recommendation for your smile!

Dental Implant
There is also a second option which many doctors (including ourselves) believe to be the better of the two options. Of course, it is also the more expensive procedure! It is called a dental implant, and it is making waves throughout the dentistry world for all the right reasons!

Implants have been around for a while, but they have just recently captured the attention and popularity that they deserve. An implant is a small post that is inserted into your jawbone to create a false tooth root. We then attach a natural-looking crown to the top of the implant for a secure restoration.

The result is the most stable dental restoration on the market. An implant can support one tooth, but it can also support a bridge of several teeth. A few implants placed strategically around your mouth can even support a full set of dentures! The implant itself is a permanent fixture in your mouth, which gives you the freedom to return to normal life without any hesitation.

The best part of the entire process is that a dental implant actually looks like a natural tooth, feels like a natural tooth, and functions like a natural tooth. It won’t be long before you forget that it’s NOT a natural tooth!
