Don’t Believe The Myths About Root Canals

Root Canals 2 | Dores Dental - East Longmeadow, MA

There’s probably no dental procedure that strikes more fear into the hearts of dental patients than the root canal. That’s a shame, because today’s modern root canals are described by the overwhelming number of patients as no worse than getting a filling! At Dores Dental in Longmeadow, MA, we make our patients’ comfort a high priority – even during root canal procedures.

How It Started

About 100 years ago, one person did dental patients a great disservice by scaring them to death about the root canal procedure. The conclusions reached by this person were based on bad science, and later research has disproved all of them. And yet, these myths just won’t die.

Myth #1: Root canals are painful.

It’s true that dental anesthesia wasn’t nearly as sophisticated or used nearly as often as it is now.A hundred years ago, the procedure undoubtedly hurt, but only for a short time – once the nerve of an infected tooth is removed, the pain is gone. With modern dental anesthesia, you needn’t worry about pain.

Myth #2: Root canals can spread dental infection into the body.

Root canals clean out infection from within the tooth by removing the dental pulp and the nerves and blood vessels it contains. Additional medication may be placed in the tooth to ensure that every trace of dental infection is gone. Rather than spreading infection, a root canal prevents the spread of that infection.

Myth #3: Tooth extraction is always better than root canals.

We know that keeping your natural tooth – protected by a dental crown after a root canal procedure – is the best option. Missing teeth can affect the thickness and strength of the underlying bone. Missing teeth can lead a person to chew more on one side, and that can cause premature wear of the tooth enamel and other problems. Missing teeth can affect a person’s self-confidence and social and occupational success.

Surprisingly Simple

When you schedule a root canal procedure with Dr. Jim Dores of Dores Dental, here’s what you can expect. We’ll make sure you’re comfortable in the dental chair; we have a range of comfort options to choose from.

Dr. Dores will ensure the tooth and the surrounding area are thoroughly numb. If you’re not a fan of needles, you’ll be happy to learn about our DentalVibe Injection System that makes numbing injections painless.

Dr. Dores will open the top of the tooth to expose the pulp. Using special tools, he’ll carefully extract all the dental pulp, including everything within the root canals, to remove any infected tissue. Again, once the nerve has been removed, there’s nothing to send pain signals to your brain.

Dr. Dores will fill the interior of the tooth with an inert material, and then protect the tooth with a dental crown. Unlike many other practices, you can get a same-day CEREC crown meaning that you don’t need to keep a second appointment.

And that’s it. Over-the-counter pain medication will probably handle any discomfort afterward.

Don’t Fear The Root Canal

If you’re having severe dental pain, or severe dental pain suddenly stops for no reason, your tooth may be at risk. Save your tooth and save yourself a great deal of pain, time, and money afterward.
