Your Gums Can Keep You Happy And Healthy

Welcome back to our Dores Dental blog!

It is actually kind of hard to believe that September is already here.

This means that, with summer behind us, life is once again busy for the families of Longmeadow, MA.

That’s why, at Dores Dental, we try to make it easy for you to get all of your family’s dental needs attended to at one convenient location (our office on Dwight Road).

Here, we offer a comprehensive range of cosmetic and family dental services including preventive cleanings and exams, dentures, restorations, esthetic dentistry, dental implants, sleep apnea care, and Invisalign.

What’s more, we believe that dentistry entails a lot more than just fixing teeth and creating beautiful smiles.

It is about helping folks maintain overall health and wellness.

That’s why we also offer treatment solutions (and prevention education) centered around gum disease.

Why Should I Be Afraid Of Gum Disease?

You should be afraid of gum disease for a number of reasons, including the fact that the majority of adults in the United States will have had some level of gum disease in the course of their lifetime.

Gum disease starts out as gingivitis, a barely noticeable condition that is a result of your body’s reaction to the bacteria contained in plaque.

Gingivitis can inflame your gums and cause bad breath. But it is a reversible condition if it isn’t allowed to advance into periodontal disease.

How Do I Know If I Have Full-Blown Periodontal Disease?

Plaque that is given the opportunity to build up will, over time, sink under the gumline spreading toxins and inducing a response to all of the irritation.

You will know you are dealing with full-blown periodontal disease when your gums become tender, swollen, and bleed easily.

Periodontal disease will viciously bombard your gums and bone structure so that they can no longer give your teeth the support they need.

As you can imagine, this is not a good situation.

As the disease progresses, your teeth will become loose and then begin falling out of your mouth.

Trust us, that doesn’t leave much to smile about (or smile with!).

Gum Disease Can Affect Your Entire Body

As if all that wasn’t bad enough, gum disease won’t stay in your mouth for long.

Untreated periodontal disease can actually ravage your entire body if it gets into your bloodstream.

Cancer, diabetes, respiratory disease, and heart disease have been linked to the bacteria that causes gum disease.

Think about that for a while!

Dores Dental Can Help

If you have (or suspect that you might have) gum disease, there are still effective treatment options available at Dores Dental.

Gum disease, caught early enough, is reversible.

Professional cleanings from our team and proper oral hygiene at home is usually all that it takes to restore your gums to good health.

Full-blown periodontal disease, however, will necessitate additional treatment measures.

It all depends on your particular case, but whenever possible, we opt for deep cleaning in conjunction with antibiotics to treat advanced gum disease. In extreme cases, surgery may be required.

Rest assured that, whatever your situation, our Dores Dental team will help you find a solution that best fits your needs.
