Summer Smile Risks

Here in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, summertime is going strong! We love this time of year! Most kids are out of school and having fun. Plus, New England is the best place to get a touch of Americana this time of year! We love everything about summer, and we live it up as best as we can.

From our family at Dores Dental, we hope that you are having an absolute blast this summer! We also hope that you’re taking the necessary precautions to protect your mouth from common summertime woes. Not sure what we’re talking about? We will dig into those further down.

First, we want to make sure you know that we aren’t here to keep you from your summer fun! Our goal is simply to give you the tools and knowledge to help you protect your teeth so that you end the summer with the same beautiful smile you started with!

Enjoy Your Summer Without Ruining Your Smile

Summer is full of vacations, day trips, and lots of pictures! Each picture should show your beautiful, healthy smile. In order for you to maintain that healthy, beautiful smile for many years to come, there are a few things you can do this summer to protect yourself. Take a look below to see what we mean!

Pick Great Beverages

While lemonade and an ice cold soft drink seem to scream summer, they aren’t the best ways to keep your mouth hydrated or healthy! When it comes to quenching your thirst, you should always reach for a cold glass of water.

Water is going to do two things. First, it will cool you down! Second, it will hydrate your body, which will in turn produce saliva in your mouth. That saliva is important because it protects your teeth from harmful bacteria. Without adequate saliva, you run the risk of seeing extra cavities this summer!

Pick Healthy Snacks

Along the same line as picking a healthy beverage, make sure you have healthy snacks to go along with it. Avoid sticky, starchy snacks like pretzels, chips, and crackers. These snacks stick to your teeth and give bacteria the feast it is looking for, which can lead to decay.

Instead, rinse some fresh fruit or vegetables and pack them for your snack. Not only will you get the vitamins and minerals, but your teeth can get a little bit of a scrubbing from the rough texture of your snack!

SPF Lip Balm

The sun is always a concern during the summertime. We wear sunscreen and hats to protect our skin, but what about your lips? Do you take the measures necessary to protect your lips from damaging UV rays?

Sun exposure can lead to oral cancer, so it is important that you protect your family with SPF lip balm. This product will protect your lips and keep them smiling for years to come!

Brush After Swimming

Time at the pool is a favorite among everyone here on staff. We love to take a refreshing dip in the pool! There is a concern for your teeth, though. Chlorine can actually damage your tooth enamel, so keep pool water out of your mouth (which you should probably do anyway).

When you and your family are back in from the pool, be sure everyone takes the time to brush their teeth to remove any chlorine from their teeth. This will ensure that your teeth stay strong and healthy!

Don’t Chew Ice

There is a bad habit that gets worse during the summer months: chewing ice! Some people really love this habit, especially when it’s hot outside. The downside is that it can be VERY damaging for your teeth! One wrong bite and your tooth will crack or break leaving you in need of dental work.

Find another way to stay cool this summer. Try blending the ice into your drink instead of chewing on those ice cubes. If you do end up with a broken or cracked tooth, give us a call so we can get to work quickly!
