An Expectant Mother’s Oral Health Concern

We love to see expectant mothers around the office, not just because of their warm glow, but because we know they are already taking care of that sweet baby! When mothers first discover that they are expecting, they dive into books, websites, apps, and magazines to find out what they should and should not be doing. You will find a lot of things, but the one thing we hope you don’t skip is the importance of having a dental cleaning and exam while you are expecting.

You will have many clues that your hormones are not quite as they used to be. You will see it in your skin, your levels of exhaustion, your temper, and your oral health. Women who are expecting are more likely to develop a gum disease infection. Should an infection occur, it will progress faster for a woman who is expecting. This is an extremely important concern because research has shown a clear link between gum disease and preterm birth.

Protect Your Baby; Have the Cleaning

In order to reduce the risk of a preterm birth, you should come at least once for a cleaning and exam. This gives us the opportunity to check the health of your smile, remove the buildup around your teeth, and remove any infection that might already exist. The first stage of gum disease, gingivitis, can be removed during a thorough cleaning here in the office. There’s no reason to wait!

We know that coming into the office is not at the top of your list of things you want to do, but the benefits far outweigh the concern. Contact us today to set up an appointment. Let us know how we can help you feel more comfortable in the office. We can’t wait to see you and your bump!
